A Pair of Cuba-Destined Relief Sailboats Listed Missing subsequent to Departing the Coast of Mexico.
A extensive search and recovery operation is presently ongoing in the Caribbean waters for a pair of missing sailing vessels carrying relief goods traveling from Mexico to the island of Cuba.
Military Search and Rescue Operations Initiated
Mexico has sent navy personnel and military search aircraft to search for the missing boats, which were had on board no fewer than 9 sailors, according to a military release.
The boats had been expected to make landfall in Havana on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and no confirmation of their arrival, the navy said.
Context of Humanitarian Support to the Island
Cuba has leaned on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the country struggles through repeated power outages across the country.
"The crews and captains are seasoned mariners, and both vessels are equipped with suitable safety equipment and communication devices," a spokesperson associated with the mission commented.
The nine-person crew are citizens of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has opened communications with maritime rescue coordination centres from those nations along with their diplomatic representatives.
"The group is co-operating fully with the relevant authorities and are still optimistic in the crews' ability to make it to Cuba without incident," the official further stated.
Previous Aid Delivery
Just days before, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and greeted with fanfare another boat that had delivered a significant amount of donated goods to the island.
That boat, dubbed "a new Granma" following the name of the yacht in which Fidel Castro came back to Cuba to start the revolution in the 1950s, brought solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, infant formula, cycles and food.
Wider Political Backdrop
Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have largely spearheaded initiatives to bring critical assistance to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, a period which saw a fuel embargo on the Communist-run nation was initiated.
Global bodies have since raised alarms about "dire" supply shortages, with over 50k operations cancelled in Cuba due to energy rationing.
Diplomatic pressure have been ramped up in recent months, with remarks from various leaders emphasizing the complex situation regarding diplomatic ties.
Responding to recent proposals, a high-ranking government figure declared that "the governance model of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Reports suggest that initial phases of negotiations commenced, although their current progress remains unclear.
The maritime authorities stated it was pledged to using the full extent of its capabilities at its disposal to find the vessels and ensure the safety of the sailors.
As of now, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the government in Havana.
