Both Deceased Students Named in the Providence Campus Shooting as Law Enforcement Persist in Hunt for Perpetrator.

Two students who died in Saturday’s violent attack on the university campus had tributes paid to them on Monday – amid a widespread hunt for their assailant continued following the release by authorities in Rhode Island of the sole person detained in connection in the case.

Honoring a Lost Student

Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was remembered as “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, according to the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which honored her memory at a service on Sunday.

She served as second-in-command of Brown’s chapter of the College Republicans organization, as the club stated. Karoline Leavitt also expressed condolences on social media, saying in part: “There are no words. Keeping in mind her loved ones and companions, especially her parents.”

The Second Victim

The other deceased individual was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, a citizen of Uzbekistan in his initial year at the renowned school, according to relatives.

His name was confirmed by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. His ambitions were lofty of entering the field of neurosurgery and aiding others,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a online post.

The Shooting Incident

Nine more persons were hurt in the violent event in the engineering department of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.

Law enforcement reported by the end of Sunday that a man aged 24 taken into custody in a raid at a hotel about 17 miles from the campus earlier in the day was being released.

“We have a murderer out there,” stated the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.

He added, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you have to regroup and pursue a different angle, and this is precisely what occurred over the last day or so.”

Ongoing Concerns

Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “It is expected to provoke fresh anxiety for our community”.

The assailant began shooting inside a room in the engineering facility on Saturday, firing more than 40 rounds from a 9mm pistol, a law enforcement official told the news agency.

Police that raided the hotel found two firearms and magazines when the suspect was detained, the news agency reported.

Condition of the Injured

Regarding the nine injured, one student was released from the hospital, mentioned the university president, Christina Paxson. Seven more were in serious yet stable state, and one was in critical condition, police said on Sunday.

Durham Academy, a independent school in North Carolina, said a former student, Kendall Turner, was in the group of seriously hurt victims.

More Condolences

Tributes were paid to Cook at a memorial in Birmingham on Sunday. A reverend stated, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only during her upbringing... but at Brown she was a shining example in that institution as well.”

Martin Bertao, Martin Bertao, shared a message from the group. “Ella was recognized for her fearless, heroic, and gentle spirit as she aided her club and fellow classmates,” he said.

The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “profoundly grieved” by the passing of Umurzokov in a statement. “We extend our sincere condolences to the Umurzokov family, friends, and schoolmates and lament the passing of his bright future.”
