Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He States They Should Face Capital Punishment
Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated anger after Donald Trump accused a group of Democratic representatives of being "betrayers" and asserted they should be detained and sentenced "through capital punishment" following their posting of a controversial video.
The Content That Sparked the Dispute
The recorded message, shared on earlier this week, includes six Democratic elected officials who previously worked in armed forces or security positions.
"Similar to us, you all took an pledge to protect and support this constitution," the officials stated in the brief video. "At present, the risks to our constitution aren't just from abroad, but from right here at home. Our laws are unambiguous, you can refuse improper directives, you can refuse illegal orders, you must refuse improper directives. No one has to execute commands that violate the legal system or our founding principles."
The Former President's Angry Reply
The recorded statement reportedly provoke a furious response from the previous commander-in-chief.
On the following morning, Trump published on his social media platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another post, he wrote: "This represents really bad, and Dangerous to our Country. Their statements cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third post, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Officials React
Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, Top Democrats published a unified statement condemning the remarks.
"Partisan aggression has no position in the United States," they stated. "Congress members who participated in the video all worked our United States with tremendous patriotism and honor. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous calls for execution against members of Congress, and call on Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."
The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in communication with protective services "to guarantee the security of these officials and their families."
"Donald Trump must without delay take down these extreme social media posts and retract his aggressive rhetoric before he causes harm," the announcement added.
Representatives' Firm Answer
The officials who participated in the video also published a declaration.
"We identify as ex-military personnel and national security professionals who love this nation and made an pledge to protect and defend the founding document of the United States," they stated. "That oath lasts a lifetime, and we plan to maintain it. No intimidation, intimidation, or incitement will prevent us from that fundamental duty."
"The significant point is that the former president deems it liable to punishment by execution for us to restate the statutes," they continued. "Military personnel should recognize that we have their support as they fulfill their pledge to the founding principles and duty to follow only legal commands. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."
They stated: "Every American must come together and censure the ex-president's requests for our death and political violence. This is a time for ethical certainty."
Additional Governmental Reactions
The Opposition leader also condemned Trump's statements and posted on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the ex-commander in chief is calling for the death of government members."
He added: "This represents an direct THREAT. Each congressional member, all representatives, the entire nation – regardless of party – should condemn this immediately and absolutely."
The Conservative official supported Trump's allegation that the Democrats had participated in "treason", characterizing the video as "highly unsuitable", stating: "This constitutes very dangerous, you have leading members of the government telling troops to disobey orders, I think that's unprecedented in the nation's past."
The GOP official also allegedly informed journalists that in what he read of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the crime of sedition" but that "legal experts have to parse the wording and establish all that."
Administration Response
During a White House press conference on Thursday afternoon, when inquired by a media member, "Is the president want to execute elected officials?", the administration spokesperson responded: "No."
"It's important to note about what the former president is responding to," the representative said. "You have sitting members of the US Congress who coordinated to orchestrate a recorded statement to members of the US military, to current military personnel encouraging them to defy the executive's lawful orders."
She stated: "The integrity of our defense system depends on the command structure, and if that chain of command is compromised, it can lead to casualties, it can result in confusion, and that is exactly what these elected officials ... are essentially promoting."
