Despite Overwhelming Achievement, Expedition 33 Developers Plan to Maintain Studio Small
The game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is not only an impressive GOTY contender, it’s also a huge commercial success. Studio the development team along with publisher their publishing partner disclosed that this title surpassed 5 million units in sales, this is even with it being a day-one release on Xbox Game Pass.
This achievement came as a shock to Sandfall. “I was strongly believing that we would have an enjoyable experience achieving reasonable commercial success,” a senior team member stated.
Another leading developer pointed out the game's critical score, which currently sits at 93, came as the most surprising moment to the studio compared to what we anticipated and the actual outcome of the field was. Once it was published everybody in the studio was screaming and jumping. It felt absolutely wild.”
The positive reception has led to work on a free update for players including novel settings, enemies, and boss fights, reportedly is coming within the “upcoming month[s]”.
That said, as the title expands, don’t expect the studio to grow. Our team includes a talented crew under clear creative leadership with a clear direction for our work and future concepts. We intend to preserve the close-knit size that led to our success then develop large projects one by one,” the executive said.
The studio's scale drummed up plenty of debate when the game came out. A few well-known creators, such as the famed director, viewed the development group as the model for game development. Despite being indeed a small team versus large developers, checking the title's staff list reveals numerous contributors worked on it; Sandfall hired a team in Korea handling movement and effects, as an instance.
“We will hire a little more certainly if we have a future production surge in upcoming years,” the executive said. “Yet I picture essentially a craft studio of a few really talented people that create collective masterpieces.” They emphasized that Sandfall’s vision as a company “is more to maintain the key advantages that led to this accomplishment in the first place.”
Despite being too early for Sandfall to reveal exact details what’s next — believe me, efforts were made — they are certain their essential identity. “Turn-based gameplay, is integral to our identity of our creations,” the lead programmer explained. “The timing isn't right to be able to tell what will interest us, yet we must to stay true to the DNA of studio featuring rich storytelling and the interesting gameplay that excites us.”
The lead programmer mentioned how this game began with the visionary pursuing his ideal project. We aspire that philosophy will be repeated with upcoming games.”
