The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves
The Fed typically studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The number of positions created to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline
Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Shows Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
