Food Benefits Expected to Expire for Over 40 Million Throughout Continuing Government Closure

USDA officials declared recently that SNAP funds through a critical national support systems won't be issued during the coming month because of the continuing government funding lapse.

Impasse Persists For Nearly Four Weeks

The federal closure lasted its 25th day when the announcement was made, which followed demands from hundreds of House Democrats pushing agriculture officials to utilize reserve accounts to pay for November's food assistance.

“Ultimately, resources are exhausted,” officials announced. “At this time, there will be no benefits issued” starting next month.

Widespread Impact

Tens of millions of people depend on the regular assistance, according to federal data. Some regions, like one southwestern state, dependence on SNAP reaches one-fifth of the population.

Documents reviewed by Reuters showed that USDA officials chose not to tap emergency reserves to cover next month's assistance.

Partisan Impasse

Congressional leaders remain deadlocked regarding how to finance and restart the federal government.

A statement from the director at a prominent policy organization suggested that federal leadership had chances to prepare in advance to avoid interruption in payments.

“Officials were able and expected to made moves weeks ago to get ready to utilize available money,” the remarks concluded. “Rather, it may choose not to use them to secure political leverage” as Republicans seek to push upper chamber Democrats to vote for a funding package that would resume the federal government.

Local Responses

Governors in Louisiana and Virginia declared states of emergency this week to free up resources to address food insecurity preparing for nutrition assistance payments stopping during the upcoming period.
