Gavin Newsom Confirms He Is Considering a White House Bid in 2028
Gavin Newsom, a leading Democratic figure, has disclosed that he will determine whether to run for president in 2028 following the 2026 elections are over.
"Absolutely, I couldn't be truthful if I denied it," Newsom stated when questioned about giving serious thought to a White House bid following the 2026 ballots. "That wouldn't be honest. And I'm not."
The governor's tenure as governor wraps up in January 2027, and term limits prevent another run. However, he emphasized that any decision is a long way off.
"The future will decide," he added.
Increased Visibility as a Political Adversary
He has come to the forefront as a prominent opponent of the Trump administration, using his social media accounts and championing a ballot measure that would expand the party's representation in Congress in as a counter to redistricting by Republicans. This action has invited attacks from adversaries.
Clash on Transportation
Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that the governor is indifferent about Californians in a Sunday appearance on Fox News. Duffy announced plans to pull federal funds from the state and warned suspending the authority to grant trucking licenses.
"I intend to cut $160 million from the state," he declared, after a recent deadly accident in California involving an non-citizen semi truck driver that caused three deaths and casualties.
The governor's team highlighted that the U.S. government had renewed the driver's employment multiple times, which permitted him to secure a commercial driver's license under U.S. law.
Duffy had previously announced he was withholding $40m from California for ignoring linguistic standards for truck drivers.
Firm Rebuttal from the Governor's Office
"Former D-list reality star, now Secretary of Transportation, fails to grasp national statutes," Newsom's office responded in a last month's comment countering the secretary's comments. "Meanwhile, unlike this clown, we focus on reality: The state's truck drivers had a death rate much lower than the countrywide rate. The state of Texas – the sole state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate substantially higher than the state. Data speaks for itself. The Trump administration does."
Voter Sentiment and Campaign Considerations
A this month's study revealed that a majority of the party and 48% of all registered voters indicated that the governor must consider running for president in 2028. After the current administration began, public support for the governor has grown to an mean of 33.5% from approximately 30%, while his negative ratings has fallen from an average of over 40% to current figures.
Earlier this year, the governor stated while visiting several battleground states that he had "no clue" about his plans for 2028.
He mentioned his past difficulties, including being identified as dyslexic at the early childhood.
"The thought that a individual who got 960 on his SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was often seated at the back – that such a possibility is discussed is, in and of itself, extraordinary," he stated. "Who the hell knows? I await who presents themselves in the next election and who answers the call. And that's the question for the voters."
