Information Available Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Beach Shooting

A minimum of 16 individuals perished and in excess of 40 were hurt when assailants shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have called a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were taken to hospital.

The victims have not yet been officially identified, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She described the events leading up to the attack, stating they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. Those hurt include two officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
