Israeli citizens observe two-year anniversary of October 7th attacks as Gaza peace talks proceed
Israelis have gathered around the country to mark two years since the Hamas-led attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks continued in Egypt over a conclusion to the war in Gaza.
The attack resulted in in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely deadliest day for the Jewish community since the World War II.
Israel responded by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are seen as accurate by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"The violent opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister added on that day.
He also pledged to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the return of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the assurance that Gaza will never again pose a risk to Israel".
Commemorative Events Across Israel
The national leadership postponed official remembrance events until mid-October - after the end of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still occurred throughout the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the families of people killed in the Hamas attack was held in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was televised throughout Israeli television channels.
Some time earlier, a minute's silence was held around the country.
Peace Talks in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' delegations gathered in the North African coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to review the terms of the agreement.
A high-ranking delegate involved in the negotiations indicated that an evening round of negotiations began at 7 PM local time.
The official stated the day's discussions concluded without significant progress, amid disagreements over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not recommence combat after the initial stage of the agreement.
He noted that the discussions are "difficult and have not yet deliver any significant progress," but mentioned that intermediaries are working hard to reduce the differences between the both parties.
Critical Issues in Negotiations
- An enduring halt to fighting
- The exchange of the prisoners still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The pullout of troops from Gaza
- Arrangements for humanitarian aid deliveries
- Post-war management of the area
Civilian Feeling
In the city's public square that day, young Hagar - whose family member endured the incident on the gathering, where 378 people were murdered and dozens more were captured by Hamas militants - told: "No place appears as home anymore and until all the hostages come back no one will feel safe."
"Once we see everybody home once more, we can feel relief again. Then we can start to rebuild," she concluded.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in Jerusalem, people congregated to show their solidarity for the families of the abducted. Israel says forty-eight stay in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be living.
Activist Atalia Regev explained: "We must do every compromise required for the abducted to be released. But we truly desire assurances that we will be protected."
Surveys now consistently show that approximately the majority of Israelis want the hostilities to end in return for the liberation of the abducted.
Gaza Situation
At the area of the music event, those paying respects came together to pay their respects.
From the site, the sound of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the heavy Israeli attacks carried on.
In the urban center, attacks were noted in the dawn of Tuesday in the western Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the east side area of the community, as well the camp to the northwest.
"As the night comes, the anxiety comes with it," displaced urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing earlier, shared.
"Me and my three children are fearful of the bombings. During nighttime we are sleeping together, clinging, notably my little child who puts his face on me throughout the night."
"Continuously we monitor the updates to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be completed and that the war will come back to us."
Health Emergency
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City said it had accepted the corpses of several people by the daytime, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the south part district.
Nasser hospital in the south region of the city indicated two more dead people had been transported. An individual was killed by Israeli soldiers while looking for assistance to the south region, medical staff stated.
The region's health ministry announced a significant number of the {territ
