Lost Johann Sebastian Bach Pieces Performed for First-Ever Performance in Three Centuries

Historical organ composition
Bach is considered to have created the pair of organ works during his early years

Previously unknown organ compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach have been revealed and executed in the European nation for the initial occasion in three hundred twenty years.

The nation's Cultural Affairs Minister Wolfram Weimer called the unearthing of the pair of works a "important event for the global music scene".

They first caught the attention of a musical scholar in 1992 when he was documenting Bach manuscripts at the Brussels archive.

The organ pieces - the Chaconne composition in D minor and G minor Chaconne - were without dates and without attribution. The scholar spent the following three decades working to authenticate the identity of the pieces.

Memorable Concert

They were performed at the St Thomas Church in the eastern German municipality, where Bach is laid to rest and where he served as a music director for 27 years.

The pair of works were performed by organist from the Netherlands the musical performer, who said he was proud to be able to play them for the initial performance in over three centuries.

He said the works were "exceptionally well-crafted" and would be "a great asset for organists today, as they are also suitable for more compact instruments".

Cultural Relevance

They are believed to have been composed early in Bach's career, when he was serving as an music instructor in the municipality of Arnstadt in the German region.

The researcher, who is now the director of the Bach research center in the municipality, said they demonstrated several qualities distinctive to the musical genius.

"In terms of style, the compositions also feature characteristics that can be observed in Bach's compositions from this period, but not in those of different artists," he said.

They are thought to have been written down in 1705 by a student of Bach, the historical figure.

At a presentation of the works, the researcher said he was "almost completely confident that the composer had created the pair of works" and they have now been added into the official catalogue of his works.
