Mount Mahameru Eruption in the Southeast Asian nation Triggers Emergency Relocations
The nation's Mount Semeru, the highest peak on the island of Java, has exploded, blanketing several villages with volcanic ash, prompting evacuations and leading authorities to raise the alert to the maximum level.
The volcano in the province of East Java released searing clouds of fiery ash and a combination of rock, lava and gas that moved up to 4 miles down its slopes multiple times from noon to evening, while a dense plume of hot clouds rose 1.2 miles into the sky, as stated by Indonesiaâs Geology Agency.
The outbursts that occurred throughout the day forced authorities to raise the mountain's warning status twice, from the level three to the top level, the authority said. No deaths or injuries have been reported.
Over three hundred inhabitants in the three villages most at risk in the district of Lumajang region were evacuated to government shelters, according to a representative for the national disaster mitigation agency.
He said that increased activity of the volcano on Wednesday afternoon prompted officials to widen the danger zone to 8km from the crater. People were advised to keep away from an area along the Kobokan River, which is the route of the molten rock stream, as searing gas moved down Semeruâs slopes.
Footage on social media displayed a thick plume of ash moving through a wooded ravine to a waterway beneath a bridge. Residents, some with faces smeared with ash and water, fled to makeshift refuges or departed for alternative secure locations.
Local media indicated that emergency teams were facing challenges to save about 178 people stranded on the 3,676-metre peak at the Ranu Kumbolo observation station. The group comprised 137 hikers, 15 porters, seven guides and six tourism officials, according to an spokesperson with the national park.
âThey are currently safe at Ranu Kumbolo monitoring post,â an official stated in a video statement. He said the post was located 2.8 miles from the summit on the north side of the mountain, which is outside the trajectory of the hot cloud flow that was seen traveling to the south-southeast. Inclement conditions and rain required the group to spend the night there, he explained.
The volcano, also called Great Mountain, has erupted many occasions in the last two centuries. However, as is the situation with numerous of the 129 live volcanoes in the archipelago, tens of thousands of people still to live on its fertile slopes.
The mountain's last major eruption was in late 2021, when 51 people were killed and several hundred others were injured and settlements were submerged in layers of mud. The event forced the evacuation of over ten thousand people from their houses.
Indonesia, an island chain of over 280 million people, is located along the Pacific âring of fireâ, a horseshoe-shaped series of fault lines, and is susceptible to seismic events and volcanic activity.
