Music Legend Barry Manilow Scheduled for Surgery for Cancer in His Lung.
Barry Manilow has revealed that he was diagnosed with lung cancer and is set to have a surgical procedure.
Cancer Caught Early
The octogenarian performer, known for a string of high-spirited hits from "Copacabana" established him as one of pop music’s most beloved showmen, will have a procedure to remove part of his lung in an effort to combat the illness, which is in its early stages.
“As many of you know, I recently went through six weeks of bronchitis followed by a return of another five weeks.
“Although I was recovered from the illness and back on stage in Las Vegas, my attentive medical team requested an MRI just to ensure that there were no issues.
“The MRI discovered a malignant lesion on my left side that requires removed. It’s incredible chance (and a fantastic physician) that it was discovered so early.”
Postponed Performances
He has rescheduled a series of forthcoming shows, but indicated he would be returning to perform by Valentine’s Day for his long-running residency in Las Vegas.
He continued: “The doctors do not believe it has metastasized and I’m undergoing further tests to support their conclusion. So, that’s it. Chemo is not needed. No radiation. Just chicken soup and I Love Lucy reruns.
“I’m eagerly awaiting until I come back to my second home in Las Vegas for our special weekend performances.”
Professional and Personal Journey
Manilow is now in the 16th year of a concert series on the Las Vegas Strip. The singer has spent decades in the limelight and came out as gay in 2017, after wedding his partner of many years, Garry Kief confidentially in 2014.
The couple were in a discreet relationship for more than 35 years. In 2023, Manilow discussed how crucial his husband had been to him during his explosion in popularity in the 1970s.
“When my fame skyrocketed, it was just crazy. And, you know, coming home to an vacant room, you can get into a lot of trouble if you, you know, you’re by yourself night after night,” he said.
“But I found my partner right around when it was blowing up. And I was spared from having to go back to those lonesome rooms. I had a person to share sorrows with or to enjoy success with.
“I desire that newcomers today don’t have to go back to those rooms by themselves, because you can make poor choices. I never did. But it was very solitary until I met Garry. And then it was joyful.”
