Forecasters have indicated a frosty commencement to the new year, with wintry precipitation anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants are advised to wrap up as bitterly cold temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Events Continue Amid Warnings

Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay events are expected to take place, following last year's calling-off. This is in spite of advisories for snow in northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those partying, so additional clothing will be necessary," said the Met Office.

Displays Under Clear but Frosty Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks displays, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. The mercury are due to be cold, meaning warm wraps essential, as per forecasters.

Further north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to hamper visibility for watching fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Widespread Weather Alerts for Friday

Heading into Friday, snow alerts have been issued across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• People have been urged to leave additional time for journeys on the road.
• Delays and cancellations are likely on the transport network.

Readings Set to Plummet Even More

With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are set to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are likely to affect the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Public Health Warnings Released

In addition, serious cold weather health warnings have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with readings likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities stated this signified the weather was expected to trigger major effects across health and social care services. This encompasses a potential rise in the fatality numbers among those with health conditions or those in the older age groups.
