New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during a recent discussion.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”

The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he is reported as serious yet stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “However, I can share, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”

NYPD issued video stills earlier this week of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday in the area between the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The assailant escaped.

Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a child.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.

He joined the Jets as a free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a key part of an improved special teams group under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on August 2 and had to be helped off.

Boyd continued to be present all season long while healing from his surgery.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with New York in March.
