The 2026 Formula 1 cars are designed to be lighter, more agile and sustainable relative to present-day cars.

The world of Formula 1 has revealed the simplified language that will be used to describe the technical complexities of its upcoming 2026 technical rules.

The championship is implementing what is arguably the most significant technical shift in its illustrious history for the 2026 campaign, featuring fresh chassis and power unit regulations and the mandatory use of eco-friendly fuels.

The updated 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrids, which maintain the hybrid V6 layout, boast a greatly enhanced battery power, necessitating significant developments in the aero packages.

Over a race distance, pilots will strategically manage electrical energy – sometimes even qualifying laps – to achieve the optimal performance.

Wide-ranging research were conducted with a diverse audience, including new, casual and core fans, to identify which phrases would improve understanding of the central aspects of the upcoming rules.

The stated goal was to make a range of advanced new areas of the competition as accessible as possible for the widest audience.

Consequently, previous placeholder terms for specific components – such as "modes labelled X and Z" for the adjustable aero – have been phased out in preference for straightforward terms that directly explain the real-world effect of the system.

What's the New Technology?

According to rule-makers that competitors will have more power to determine tactics regarding battery management, regeneration, and saving energy.

The 2026 rules mandate a set of functions that will be shown on TV overlays to enhance the fans' insight of the race battle.

  • Overtake Mode: This supersedes the current DRS. It provides a short boost of battery power accessible when a car is less than a second the vehicle in front to execute an pass.
  • Boost Mode: This is a manual energy deployment from the energy recovery system that can be used in attack or defence. It provides the pilot full engine and battery energy at the push of a button.

Both of these key functions will have to be deployed strategically, as the available electrical charge is capped.

  • Adjustable Aero: Both the car's wings move automatically – spreading on the straights for low aerodynamic resistance and increased velocity, and closing in the bends for optimal cornering performance.
  • Recharge: Cars can harvest energy with power recovered from braking, or during coasting at the straight's end or in sections where only reduced throttle is used.

What's Changing on the Cars?

The vehicles for the new era will be more compact and lighter compared to the 2025 spec, with a distance between axles shortened by 200mm to 3,400mm, width cut by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the car weight decreased by 30kg.

Cumulative downforce is expected to drop by approximately fifteen to thirty percent, although squads will inevitably claw this back as they develop their cars.

Drag has been reduced by 40%. The cars will feature adjustable aero systems – front and rear wings will move on the straight sections to improve speed and boost top speed and return into place for peak handling.

Wheels will keep 18-inch rims, but the actual tyres will be narrower, by a quarter-centimetre on the front and 30 millimetres on the rear axle.

Power Unit Revolution

The revised hybrid units will have an near-equal balance in horsepower generated by the petrol engine and the battery and motor, up from about 20% battery contribution in the current formula.

The ERS setup is simplified through the deletion of the complex turbo energy recovery device, the complicated and costly component that harvested power from the turbo.

Cars will be required to run on 100% sustainable fuel, produced using organic sources or synthetic industrial processes.
