The Game UN:Me: An Cerebral Horror That Blends Silent Hill with Among Us Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a unique experience where a girl containing multiple personalities within her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of high school age. Within her reside four separate personas, each with their own fears and drives. These entities can seize control at will, releasing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.
Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie hospital, though other scenes depict the protagonist navigating a abandoned chapel.
A World of Personal Dread
"What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Things that seem trivial to others can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game explores that idea — fears that are specific to every individual."
The core mechanic involves controlling the persona that surfaces at a particular time. However, these identities will switch involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become amplified and attack the protagonist in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Choice
At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with orderlies who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the lobby have enormous flowers where their heads are. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
Once players have deduced a soul is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, because every entity can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The last one remaining might be a fake. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
