The Legendary Jimmy Cliff, Music Legend and Cultural Icon, Dies at 81 Years Old

The world mourns the loss of Jimmy Cliff, the celebrated Jamaican musician and performer whose captivating voice was instrumental in popularizing the reggae genre worldwide. The artist passed away at the age of 81.

“It’s with profound sadness that I announce that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has passed away due to a seizure followed by pneumonia,” posted his spouse Latifa Chambers on Instagram. “I am grateful for his family, close friends, peers in the arts and colleagues who shared his life’s path. To all his supporters globally, please know that your encouragement was his strength throughout his entire professional life … Jimmy, my dear, may you rest peacefully. I will follow your wishes.” Her post was co-signed by their children, Lilty and Aken.

Jimmy Cliff gained fame for hit songs including You Can Get It If You Really Want, “I Can See Clearly Now” and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His optimistic musical style and positive temperament brought him a vast and longstanding fanbase.

In addition to his music accomplishments, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972 crime drama The Harder They Come, a role that received critical praise and is viewed as a landmark of Jamaican cinema.

Jimmy Cliff was among the select few of musicians, alongside Bob Marley and others, to be honored with the prestigious Jamaican Order of Merit.
