A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has been granted a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.

A Landmark Return to the Australian Courts

Tournament officials confirmed on Friday that the 45-year-old legend will make a return at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. During 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the quarter-finals to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Summer Swing

The tennis star had earlier stated in November her intention to play in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a wild card, a fortnight before the Australian Open. The Australian Open added that Williams is scheduled to play a tournament in Australia's Hobart International a following week, just before the action begins at Melbourne Park.

Her last appearance in the city was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I’m excited to be back in Australia and eagerly anticipating competing during the summer season," Venus stated. "I have experienced so many unforgettable memories there, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to go back to a place that has been so significant to my career."

Setting a New Record

The tournament pointed out that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to compete in an Open's main draw, surpassing the record formerly set by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she lost in the first round at the venue in 2015.
