Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs circulated this morning that show the aftermath of a alleged car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed to his injuries. An investigation is under way.
Our starting point to verify the site from which the images were from relied on social media reports saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow hue of a nearby apartment building seen in the footage.
Identifying other buildings, streetlights and the street layout confirmed the exact location the pictures were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not been digital alteration.
