As part of a notable escalation, Ukrainian forces have employed long-range Storm Shadow missiles to target and hit a major Russian oil processing facility. This strike occurred on Thursday, as stated by the Ukrainian military authorities.
Details of the Strike and Strategic Impact
The targeted facility, the Novoshakhtinsk refinery, was reportedly hit, with "numerous explosions" observed at the location. This marks not the first instance where Ukraine has deployed these advanced British-supplied missiles against objectives inside Russian soil.
Military spokespersons noted that the Novoshakhtinsk plant serves as one of the main suppliers of fuel products in Russia's south and is directly involved in providing for the military of the Russian Federation.
Diplomatic Developments on the War Front
Separately, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Thursday that he held productive discussions with envoys of former US President Donald Trump, namely Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. These talks focused on possible ways to end the war.
“We had a very productive conversation: numerous specifics, good ideas, that we discussed,” Zelenskyy stated on a social media platform. “We explored some fresh concepts on how to move toward a genuine peace closer, and it involves formats, potential summits, and, of course, the timeline.”

In a parallel domestic matter, a court in Russia has found guilty a pro-war activist and critic of Vladimir Putin on charges of supporting terrorist activities. Sergei Udaltsov, leader of the opposition movement, was given to six years in prison.
The charges reportedly stem from an article Udaltsov published in support of another group of activists charged with forming a terrorist organisation. Udaltsov has denied the charges as fabricated and, after the sentencing, reportedly announced to go on a hunger strike in defiance.

A theatre in Mariupol, which was destroyed in a devastating bombardment while many civilians sought refuge in its basement, is set to open its doors again. Russian occupation authorities have promoted the rebuilding as a sign of renewal.
