When Sunbathers Ran From Danger, Viral Photo Shows Beach Patrol Sprinting ‘Full Speed’ In the Direction of the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent inhabitant of Bondi, views the iconic shoreline as her own backyard. On that particular weekend evening, she, like many neighbors, detected cracking sounds echoing through the community.

“We all thought the same, but I thought it was too light and there was nothing visible,” Ching recounts. Stepping out of her home, she observed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The looks she saw made it clear something was wrong.

Positioned on the avenue, conversing with a duo who had run up the hill soaked, she noticed someone coming up at her rear. It was a rescuer, sprinting in the direction of Bondi unshod from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while transporting a defibrillator.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I spotted this flash of blue,” Ching describes. “He was simply racing by. He was the only one moving in the path that all the others was trying to flee, and hauling that large equipment and without footwear … He’s running into something that surely every fibre in your being would instruct you to move in the other direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just fully pedal to the metal running.”

A Symbol of Bravery Amidst Tragedy

The image taken by Ching of the rescuer, later named as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as a prime example of acts of courage in the wake of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, explained that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to back up the other members at Bondi, as well as to work with emergency personnel, police and paramedics caring for numerous those hurt.

Community Reaction and Support

Doolan’s story was a single example among several to be shared by the local area, with the patrol base adjacent to the location of the attack becoming a impromptu medical station. Local Government Praise

Waverley council, the governing body that employs many professional beach safety officers, stated that the staff acted heroically from the moment the violence started until late that evening.

“There have been so many emotional stories, but the viral photo of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help preserve life is remarkable,” said a council representative.

“The team demonstrate altruism every day in maintaining the safety of our iconic shores secure for visitors, but what we witnessed on Sunday should be celebrated.

“During this time of sorrow and grapple with the horror of this violent and horrific terrorist attack, I think it is important that we reflect on just how much good we have seen in the presence of such hatred.”
