Scorching conditions and intense bushfires have devastated the dry landscape of Western Australia. With mercury levels forecast to persist climbing above 40C (104F) over the next few days, a severe alert for extreme heat has been declared across much of the southwestern region.

This situation follow recent bushfires in another state, which resulted in the destruction of properties and fatalities. Intense heat alerts have additionally been issued for the coming days in areas within SA and New South Wales, as a system of atmospheric pressure moves eastward, delivering blazing sunshine to a broad swath of the area.

The combination of tinder-dry land and relentless heat creates a volatile situation for emergency crews.

Worldwide Climatic Events Trigger Disruption

In another part of the world, a major city was plunged into blackout last week after powerful gusts compromised the city’s electrical network, with toppled trees bringing down power lines. The weather conditions also caused major travel disruption at a major airport, where numerous air services were grounded. Substantial impact on power systems is expected to cause further problems as service providers scramble to reconnect electricity to over 1 million inhabitants.

Atypical Mist Blankets Typically Clear Region

At the same time, a valley known for its clear skies and plentiful sunshine has endured one of its dullest and foggiest weeks on record. A specific type of fog, which usually lasts for only a few days, has been unusually extensive and persistent this year, holding temperatures at a major airport under 8C for over a week – the most prolonged period in over three decades. The extended haze has been driven by exceptional autumn rainfall that resulted in soils saturated.
